A View of Lac de Saint Croix in Provence

Provence France

Not only is the Provençal area of France renowned for its beautiful landscape and delicious food, it's also a great place to enjoy a sun-kissed ride along France's lovely southern coast. For a truly picturesque ride, make your way to Montauroux, a charming village that is surrounded by forests and hiking paths. From cycling into town to pick up your freshly baked pastries and baguettes, to exploring the nearby countryside, pedalling in and around Montauroux will provide you with so much to see and do en route.

Alternatively, if you prefer to be closer to the coast, enjoy cycling up and down the roads in the town of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Pedal past the river Sorgue and explore the local markets and stunning flora.

Peloponnese, Greece

Rich with history and culture, the towns and villages of Greece's Peloponnese region are the perfect destinations for the odd bike ride, or two. To rewind time, take on the cycle paths and roads of Mycenae , where you can explore the ancient entrance of the Lion Gate, which is a stunning example of Bronze Age architecture.

After a day of exploring Mycenae's historical past, why not take on the roads of Kardamili, a charming coastal town. As you pedal along, you'll encounter deep pools of aquamarine and mountainous fields of forestry that are dotted with sand-coloured homes. Kardamili is also a great place to stop for a bite to eat; there are plenty of great restaurants where you can dig into delicious plates of freshly grilled seafood.

A bike by the coast in Menorca

Menorca Spain

Despite Menorca being one of the smaller of the Balearic Islands, with its 3,000-kilometres of cycle paths, tracks and roads, it's a must-visit for any avid cyclist. As you pedal up and down the sometimes-challenging terrain, you'll encounter countless green fields, gorgeous beaches and intriguing wildlife – there's little traffic either, making it an incredibly easy and peaceful ride.

New routes include a long-distance cycle through the centre of the island, and past the towns of Alaior and Ferreries. It's definitely worth a try, especially when you first cycle past the stunning Talaiotic megalithic stones that were put in place by the island's earliest settlers.

Bicycles in the street in Alghero, Sardinia

Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia is the gem of Italy, and cycling your way around it has to be the best way to see every part of the island. If you prefer the beauty of the countryside, then enjoy a pedal tour around the scenic Cannonau region. Fields of vineyards complete this area's landscape, so be sure to end your day of cycling with a glass of this fine wine.

If you take your cycling seriously and fancy a challenge, then be sure to tackle the cycle route along the west of the island, from Alghero to Cagliari. Although it will take more than a couple of days to complete, it promises to make up for any lethargy with Sardinia's stunning views. However, if you just want a short bicycle tour, then pedalling just around the town of Alghero can prove to be just as enriching. Take the time to enjoy the town's costal vistas of the crystal clear sea, bright white sand, as well the bustling shops and restaurants.
