Food & Diningin the area of St. John's

Food and dining at Blue Waters

There are plenty of places to dine in St John's and a wide variety of cuisine, whether you're looking for local specialities or more internationally recognised food, there will be something for all tastes.

If you fancy trying some traditional Caribbean food, be aware that it can be typically spicy, but full of flavour! Locally caught fish and seafood including lobster, red snapper and shrimp are a common addition to the menu as well as barbequed chicken, usually accompanied by seasoned or spicy rice.

If you want to sample some true Antiguan dishes, lookout for the following on the menu:

  • Fungee – the national dish similar to polenta or dumplings.
  • Pepperpot – a thick stew of vegetables and meat, usually served with fungee.
  • Ducana – a potato dumpling but with a sweet flavour wrapped in a banana leaf, a contrasting taste on a savoury dish.
  • Locally grown fruit, on their own or in juices – Coconut, bananas, lime, black pineapple and mango.
  • Roti – a potato patty with a curried flavour, sometimes with meat.

Ting is a deliciously refreshing grapefruit drink you will often see in cafes in Antigua, and you may have heard of ‘English Harbour’ – a famous brand of rum which is distilled here on the island. Antigua also has its own beer called Wadadli, a type of lager also brewed on the island

Lounge bars by the sea offer a relaxed vibe, enjoying stunning sunset vistas over a fruity cocktail or two. Some even offer karaoke at the weekends, check at the location for events.

English Harbour has the best nightlife if you’re into discos and clubs, however St. Johns still has plenty to offer including the latter, plus more than one casino, and many restaurants and bars.

Restaurants and Bars

There are three delicious restaurants and three bars to choose from here at the Blue Water resort, depending on what takes your fancy. If it's just refreshing drinks you're looking for, head to one of the bars where you will often also find live entertainment such as steel drum bands. All three restaurants serve fantastic Caribbean cuisine, and there are also breakfast and snacks to make the most of during the day.

The Palm Restaurant, Caribbean

Set in the lush gardens with a great terrace and views over the sea, The Palm restaurant is the main eatery on the resort, starting with breakfast and moving onto simple snacks and salads during the day, with a more refined feeling in the evening with a laid-back Caribbean menu including fresh fish and seafood. There is also a child-friendly menu on offer here.

Open daily for breakfast (7:30am – 10:30am), continental breakfast (10:30am – 11:00am), lunch (12:30pm – 2:30pm), afternoon tea (4:00pm – 5:00pm) and dinner (6:00pm – 9:30pm).

Main meals range from $8 - $26 during the day and $26 - $38 during the evening.

Guests should wear tops and footwear at all times. Beachwear is accepted during the day on the terrace. Flip flops are not permitted in the evening.

Bartley’s Restaurant, Caribbean

Intimate and elegant, Bartley’s restaurant sets a romantic atmosphere perfect for a special occasion. The cuisine is pure Caribbean class, with a selection of colourful curries and tropical temptations.

Open 2 – 3 nights per week.

Main meals range from $27 - $30.

Evening attire should be worn (collars for men, tailored shorts or trousers). T-shirts and flip flops are not permitted.

The Cove Restaurant, French

Situated by the Coves Suites in a fantastic cliff-top position, The Cove Restaurant specialises in a fusion of French and Caribbean delights with breath-taking views of the sun setting on the ocean.

Open 4 – 5 nights per week for dinner (6:00pm – 9:30pm).

Main meals range from $28 - $55.

Evening attire should be worn (collars for men, tailored shorts or trousers). T-shirts and flip flops are not permitted.

Pelican Bar, Bar

A typical Caribbean bar with views over the gardens and sea, the Pelican Bar is located close The Palm Restaurant and so is a great choice for a pre or post-dinner aperitif. It’s positioning near the reception and bandstand means you can relax in the day or evening with enjoying the entertainment.

Guests should wear tops and footwear at all times.

Veronica’s Bar, Pool bar

A laid-back beach bar located by the main pool, perfect for those who want to combine sunbathing and snacking in-between cooling dips into the pool. This is a family-friendly spot and also hosts the Manager’s Cocktail party where you can sample some of the local tipples!

Beach Bar, Pool bar

Enjoy a lazy cocktail from the comfort on your sun lounger, or pop by in the evening for some tantalising fruity beverages with a serene view over the Caribbean Sea. The Beach Bar has a much more rustic and relaxed feel than the other establishments on the resort and is always very popular with visitors.
