Fresh grilled fish is always a good choice when eating out. Try the papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes) a popular accompaniment with the mojos (spicy sauces). The Ron Miel (honey rum) is considered a local delicacy and can be purchased on many market stalls, you will usually be served this after a meal for free!
Maspalomas offers a tasteful and more upmarket style of nightlife, with the entertainment, bars and restaurants located along the Meloneras promenade close to the lighthouse. Here you will find local traditional restaurants as well as fine dining and a-la-carte menus, all suitable for a family evening out. You can enjoy a meal and a cocktail or two in very pleasant surroundings, with lots of designer shops open til late. Playa del Ingles, the party hub, is just a short taxi ride away if you are after a more lively scene.
Boat trips can be found all along the coast, ranging from luxury catamaran cruises to deep sea fishing boats to dolphin watching excursions.
For lovers of nature, a 50 minute drive will take you up to the north of the island where the botanical gardens 'Viera y Clavijo' are located, established in 1952. There are many species of flora and fauna grown here, a paradise for nature enthusiasts. You will enjoy wondeful views of these colourful gardens at the sites' restaurant, located at the entrance.

Palmitos Park - One of the best wildlife and botanical parks in the Canary Islands. You can enjoy displays of Raptors, Parrots and exotic bird shows, and you can admire the spectacular dolphin shows, even swim with them, plus visit the aquarium, and the largest collection of orchids in Europe.
The Sioux City, which is a great western style theme park located in San Bartolome de Tirajana, nearby San Agustin. Visitors can experience the wild wild west with exciting and interactive shows.
There are three waterparks to choose from in the area; Aqualand in Maspalomas is the biggest in the Canary Islands, Ocean Park in Maspalomas with it's 13 water slides and Atlantida in Puerto Rico has the longest and fastest water slide on the island.
Head to Puerto Rico for a change of scenery with it's relaxed eateries and duty free shopping centre. The beach at Puerto Rico has plenty of watersports and lined with snack bars and family-friendly restaurants. Drive a little further and find a great man-made beach called Amadores, a longer beach with yellow sand, shops and restaurants.
You cannot visit Gran Canaria without seeing the Maspalomas Natural Dune Reserve, over a kilometre of sandy dunes running parallel between the town centre and the sea. The dunes gradually descend into lovely beaches, and you can take a camel ride over the peaks of the rippling sand.
Puerto Mogan is a charming place, just a 25 minute drive away with a sandy beach and quaint selection of bars and restaurants along the sea front. It is nick-named "Little Venice" for it's canals and bridges in the streets, and truly is a pretty and authentic Canarian village.
Cosmopolitan Las Palmas - In under an hour’s drive you can visit the Island’s capital city Las Palmas. Its a bustling city overflowing with Spanish ambience, history and culture, plus a harbour and two beaches – Playa de las Canteras and Playa de las Alcaravaneras. Its great for shopping with lots of high end shops and boutiques, side streets laden with cafes and great places for tapas and drinks whilst strolling along the streets.

Classical Music F...local event
Gran Canaria has two annual world class classical music festivals. The Canary Islands Music Festival in January and February is the first classical music festival of the European season. It takes place all over the Canary Islands and you can go to concerts in both the Las Palmas Alfredo Kraus auditorium and the Expomeloneras concert venue in Maspalomas.

Maspalomas carnival, happens right in the middle of Playa del Inglés resort and is hugely popular with visitors and tourists. Maspalomas carnival consists of street parties, parades, concerts and live music every day including a drag and queen gala and burial of the sardine and fireworks. There is also one in Las Palmas and Porto Mogan as well.
Maspalomas Gay Pridelocal event
Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés have one of the best gay pride events. While the parade gets all the headlines and attracts the biggest crowds, the Pride event lasts for two weeks (May 3-13) and centres around the vast Yumbo Shopping Centre. Maspalomas Pride is about as much fun as you can pack into two weeks and everyone on the island at the time should head over and enjoy the atmosphere.
