Canary Islands Winter Holidays

You can visit this Atlantic Archipelago any time of year, thanks to temperatures that rarely drop below a delightful 20°C. With a wealth of natural beauty and a mix of fabulous beaches, diverse landscapes and rugged mountains, these islands offer up the perfect measure of leisure and pleasure. After talking all things Lanzarote, we decided to focus on our other three favourites. Here's the inside scoop on catching some waves and rays on a Canarian winter sun getaway!

Canary Islands Winter Sun

Windsurfing close to the coast on the Canary island of Fuerteventura

Last but most definitely not least we have Fuerteventura. Blessed with Caribbean style sands and outstanding turquoise waters, this Canary island is a beach lover's paradise, boasting some of the best shores in all of the Archipelago. If it's a beach escape you're looking for – look no further! Countless coves offer calm and quiet to sunbathe in peace, just take your pick from the impressive Blue Flag bays.

Breezy coasts are a magnet for wind surfers and watersport enthusiasts, while mountain biking is a popular way to admire the scenery inland. An island asking for action and adventure, thrill-seekers can enjoy outdoor activities year-round – including off-road jeep safaris, quad biking, surfing, sea-kayaking, diving and jet-skiing.

Lobos Island is an islet just north of Fuerteventura. A protected natural park, it's a safe haven for birds, plants and other wildlife. Step into the surreal and explore the curious trails through volcanic rocks, fishing villages, salt marshes, golden sands and lagoons. Just a 15 minute boat trip from Corralejo, it's a unique way to spend the day. Corralejo itself is home to plenty of natural beauty, with desert dunes and the Red Mountain to name a few.

Golden sand and turquoise water of El Cotillo beach, viewed from across the sea

The off-beat coastal town of El Cotillo is full of charm and character. Once a small fishing village, it's now a tourist hot-spot with two harbours and some of the islands best beaches. Blue skies, bluer seas and fine white sands make for a dreamy day of laid-back living. Tantalise your taste buds with exotic seafood and catch of the day dishes, or savour multiple flavours with traditional tapas dishes. If its charm and character you're after, don't miss out on the beautiful Bentacuria. Set in a picturesque valley in the islands interior surrounded by mountains, set your sights on this sparkling white treasure with houses dating back as far as the 15th Century.

Maspalomas sand dunes

Sought-after sandy shores, green leafy forests and dramatic mountainscapes monopolise this idyllic island. Minimum average temperatures of a marvellous 21°C make Gran Canaria a perfect solution to the winter sun conundrum.

The stunning Maspalomas sand dunes of the south offer up a real life desert experience. The area they cover is so vast you can take your time to savour and explore the beautiful landscape away from the crowds. Even in winter the sand here can become too hot to walk on, so be sure to have a trusty pair of flip flops in tow to protect any little toes!

For a slice of Gran Canarian culture check out the capital city Las Palmas. There's countless ways to while away the days from shopping in duty-free stores to something a little more traditional at the urban village of Pueblo Canario. An authentic Cananrian village in the heart of the capital, sit back and enjoy live performances of local folk music on Thursdays and Sundays (and best of all, it's free!) Stroll around beautiful and bustling squares and plazas. Lined with atmospheric bars and restaurants to grab a refreshing beverage – it sure beats the hot soups needed to survive the winter back home!

To really experience the islands dramatic landscape, take a coastal road trip. Magical mountain drives reveal pine-clad peaks dotted with white-washed villages and jaw-dropping skylines. The northwest coastal road is one of the best, with an unbelievable view over sheer cliffs tumbling into a foamy sea below.

Los Gigantes beach in Tenerife with mountain views

Kicking things off with the largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife is a year-round suntrap. Brimming with beautiful beaches and dramatic landscapes, with the crowning glory Mount Teide taking pride of place in the mountainous middle. Magnificent vistas overlooking the island can be seen from the peak, why not hop in a cable car and savour every second as the jaw-dropping views unfold before you! Or if you're feeling more venturesome, the winter sun in Tenerife provides perfect hiking conditions. A cooling breeze keeps you from overheating as you climb.

The spectacular Los Gigantes cliffs tower 500m above the sea and offer a dizzying display of the natural world. Take a boat trip from the marina of Los Gigantes town and get up close and personal to the dramatic precipices. While you're at it, make a splash and go snorkelling or sea-kayaking. A whole host of marine life calls this place home and is just waiting to be discovered!

With your sea legs firmly established, get ready to be mesmerised by dolphin pods dancing through the water. The oceans around Tenerife are some of the best in the world, and with resident species all year-round, it's one of the best destinations to view these majestic mammals. Go whale and dolphin watching and be sure to pack your camera, the playful nature of these wonderful creatures is one you'll want to capture!

Playa de Las Teresitas beach in tenerife viewed from above

What would a winter getaway be without a beach day? Head to the idyllic cove of Las Teresitas nestled beneath the Anaga Mountains for maximum rest and relaxation. One of the few golden sandy beaches on the island (with most others being Volcanic), stretch out and sunbathe until your hearts content. Lined with palm trees and blessed with a gentle sea breeze, this beach is the perfect base to enjoy some sunshine.

And as if all that wasn't enough, Tenerife is teeming with safari, jungle and water parks for fun filled family days out. Evenings are no exception either, with Spanish dancing, discos, magic shows and music performances to be enjoyed island-wide.
