Cala Mondrago enjoys protected status as part of the "Parc Natural Mondrago" or Mondrago national park and as such is a lovely low key area of the island with two beautiful sandy coves, S'Amador and Mondrago, bordered by rocky headlands. The surrounding area is wetland, inhabited by many species of birds, whilst the nearby towns of S'Alqueria Blanca and Santanyi are close by. The busy resort of Cala D'or is just 8kms up the coast.

Food & Diningin the area of Cala d'Or
As with most busy resorts in Mallorca there is a wide variety of pavement cafes and tapas bars. Try the local fish or tapas in the centre or find a local roadside restaurant (look for local cars and taxis parked outside to experience the food the locals eat) and try the Pimientos de Padron (fried green peppers - sometimes you'll find a hot one..) and a leg or shoulder of lamb for mains. If you like Rioja wines, try a local red from Binisalem and taste how far the Mallorcans have advanced in wine production!

Nightlifein the area of Cala d'Or
Cala d'Or's nightlife is mainly concentrated in the busy, paved and traffic free centre with a great number of restaurants, both local and international, spilling out onto the pavements. There are music, sport and karaoke bars as well as late night dance bars and cocktail lounges and the atmosphere ranges from chilled and cosy to lively and loud.

Natural areas of beauty
The Parc Natural de Mondrago is a beautiful area of protected countryside awarded the status of Natural Park in the 60's and is a haven for wildlife including native tortoise. As well as great swathes of pine forest, offering cool shade ideal for picnics, there are also some stunning beaches including Cala Mondrago, s'Amarador & Fonts s'Alis.
Regions to visit
The nearby port of Cala Figuera is well worth a visit and a regular bus service will avoid the need to hunt for a parking space in the busy summer months. Also worth a visit is the popular seaside resort of Cala d'Or with its many restaurants and shops and several , sandy cove beaches. Further south the great natural beaches of Sa Rapita, Es Trenc and Ses Covetes face the island of Cabrera across the glittering sea.
Other excursions
The awesome Cuevas del Drach are just up the coast in Porto Cristo and provide a welcome slice of culture with a candle lit, floating orchestra gliding across the subterranean lake.
Other Places of interest
For bargain hunters there is a weekly market every Sunday morning in the large town of Felanitx - a 20 minute drive away.
The town of Santanyi is just inland and home to the 18th century church of Sant Andreu, situated in the Placa Mayor. One of the main entrances to the town is via the impressive Porta Murada - the ancient town gates built into the old city walls in the 16th century to repel the Arab pirates that were the scourge of the coast.
A local market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday, held in the Placa Mayor.
