Representing a new concept of zoo, the Bioparc emphasises respect for nature and the preservation of species by recreating the natural habitats from various eco-systems around the world and encouraging the animals to live side-by-side. It’s known as an ‘immersion zoo’ where visitors can take a guided walk right through tropical woodland and discover the interaction between animals as well as learning about the environment. Open daily throughout the year, the park is in the centre of Fuengirola.
The magical Tivoli World is located 15 minutes away at Benalmadena and offers plenty of fun for all the family, with fairground rides, amusement stalls, go-karts, train tours and variety shows to suit visitors of all ages. Set in beautiful gardens with illuminated fountains and an array of bars and eateries to choose from, you can happily spend all evening here. Opening hours vary according to the time of year, with summer evenings open until 1am.
Selwo Marina Delfinarium
This charming park at nearby Benalmadena is dedicated to dolphins, sea lions and exotic birds, with entertaining and educational shows and opportunities for interactive experiences both in and out of the water, including swimming with sea lions. There’s also a delightful playground and on-site restaurants so you can take your time and explore at your own pace.
Standing proudly on the hill at the far end of Fuengirola beach, Sohail Castle is the town’s most recognisable symbol, having been meticulously restored after many years in ruins. It isn’t hard to see why its strong fortress and square-built towers have played a significant part in history, from the Moorish occupation to the War of Independence in the 19th century. Offering a wonderful vantage point from which to view a long stretch of the coastline, the castle now houses a small museum, has well-tended gardens and walkways and is used as an open air theatre and concert venue in the summer months.
