The old town

At the heart of the Marbella’s Old Town is the delightful Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Tree Square), its charming alfresco restaurants shaded by leafy orange trees. The surrounding buildings are full of character, many dating from the 15th and 16th centuries and with a blend of Arabic, Gothic and Renaissance architecture. From here you can wander down numerous cobbled streets to discover dozens of individual boutiques, taps bars and cafés.

Churches / Cathedrals

Virgen del Rosario

The town’s original church was built in the 18th century but it has since been completely renovated and is now a beautifully simple, modern building with pure white décor and a stunning altarpiece. There’s still a traditional bell tower and the windows, both arched and round, are highlighted in terracotta in the local style.

Monte Mayor Castle

From its spectacular mountain location it’s easy to see why Benahavis’s 11th century Monte Mayor castle was once a vital strategic base during the battles between Arab kings in Andalusia ? on a clear day you can see over 100 kms along the coastline. It was eventually transferred to the hands of the Catholic monarchs Isabel and Ferdinand in 1485 but its ruins, including the Queen’s Tower with a bed chamber and water well, still stand today.
