Mar Menor Lagoon
The Mar Menor is separated from the Mediterranean sea by a strip of sand 22km long, which forms a barrier and has created a shallow warm water lagoon. The water is no more than 7m at its deepest point, and the absence of tides make this location perfect for families and great for many water sports. Mar Menor’s waters warm up in the Spring and stay at a fairly consistent temperature throughout the year, so that on average it is two degrees warmer than the Mediterranean. The Mar Menor offers the visitor the largest open-air mud therapy area in Europe! The ‘black mud’ from the Mar Menor is used to relieve many skin conditions. There are several places along the Mar Menor to enjoy this treatment, and several local hotels also use the mud for specialized treatments.
San Pedro del Pinatar
Located at the northern point of the Mar Menor, the salt flats in San Pedro del Pinatar form the most important wetlands in the region. Declared a national park in 1985, every year flocks of flamingos and other migratory birds nest here and use this space as their connection between Africa and Europe. Great for walkers and nature enthusiasts, this is a wonderful place to explore.
Terra Natura Wildlife and Aquatica Park
Located on the outskirts of Murcia city, Terra Natura is a great day out for all the family. With its zoological collection, fantastic shows and wonderful landscaping spanning over 165,000 square metres. The park contains over 300 animals from 50 species, some of which are very rare. During the summer there is also an aqua park offering an assortment of slides, lazy rivers, pools and entertainment.
Cabo de Palos
Cabo de Palos is a small peninsula which juts out into the Mediterranean sea in between the Mar Menor strip and the coastline of Cartagena. The peninsula was formed during volcanic eruptions, creating a unique eco-system that is very popular with divers. Cabo de Palos offers some lovely secluded beaches, a pretty marina and a lighthouse located at the tip of the peninsula.
