Despite this being a medieval hilltop town most famous for its narrow cobbled streets and castle ruins, Begur does have a small selection of bars scattered around. Mostly quite laid back and discreet, this is the perfect place for an atmospheric, relaxed evening in a wonderful setting.
Located half an hour north of Begur, just a mile off the coast of Estartit beach, the Medes Islands archipelago is a great place to visit during your stay. Known as one of the most important marine flora and fauna reserves in the western Mediterranean, it’s a very popular place for scuba diving, snorkling and bird watching. Regular boat trips (many of which are glass bottomed) start from Estartit harbour to take you on a round tip of the islands.
Coastal paths (camins de ronda) are one of Begur’s best-known attractions. Historically, they were used mainly by customs officers to keep an eye on tobacco smugglers, and by fishermen and sailors in cases of shipwreck. These days they are used as a path between the various coves to admire the stunning views of the coast. In total there are eight stunning coves each bordered with pine trees and with their own lovely sandy beach.
When staying in Begur, exploring the beautiful hillside town is an absolute must. The old town is built around the remains of its medieval castle and offers lots of winding streets, perfect for wandering and discovering charming restaurants and beautiful buildings.
Less than an hour’s drive will take you to the fantastic city of Girona.
