Live ‘la dolce vita’ at Villa Dell Angelo, nestled in the mountainous Tuscan countryside around Pistoia. This beautifully restored 18th century, stone villa finds an oh-so-happy medium between traditional charm, luxurious grandeur and modern comfort. Its large saltwater pool with hydro massage area and pristine grounds with several seating areas let you take in the magnificent views from all angles. Inside a trove of antiques and period furnishings create a backdrop that’s no less spectacular, sleeping eight in splendid style - an unforgettable holiday experience! In some parts of Italy a tourist tax maybe charged and is payable to Italian Authorities, this will be collected by the key holder or local agent. This villa has the beautiful irregularity of authentic Tuscan properties - roughhewn stone walls, tiled gable roofs, lattice windows... Indoors terracotta floors, vaulted ceilings and wooden beams decline the flawless finish of modern architecture and embrace their own perfectly-imperfect charm. Antique furnishings complete this old-world appeal. None-the-less, Villa Dell Angelo offers all the comforts and convenience that you’d expect of a contemporary, luxury holiday home.
Take the living-come-dining room; a splendid, stone-carved fireplace is the statement feature, with damask sofas huddled round in companionable style. Persian rugs, period art and antique furniture (the elegant wooden dining suite is sure to catch your eye) complete a traditional picture. Add to this a flat-screen satellite TV, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and Bluetooth speakers and you begin to understand the modern idiosyncrasies going on here.
Throughout the property the story is the same. Like any good Italian home, the kitchen is at its heart. Carved, wooden units, stone sink and counter tops and a magnificent iron stove surround an exposed brick fireplace. Homely and traditional – just like Italian food! It’s the perfect spot then to rustle up those authentic dishes, just like mamma used to make. Fortunately you have all the mod cons to help you do just that, not to mention a pretty, sun soaked terrace just outside the kitchen door to savour that first morning coffee, straight from the machine.
A second lounge area (you can’t have too much of a good thing, after all), a bathroom, utility area and a double bedroom complete the downstairs. The latter opens out onto a terrace with comfy seating area that looks out towards the pool and countryside beyond. It’s the perfect addition to an already charming room, with an elegant bedspread, rich wooden furnishings and a glass-fronted cabinet displaying large, leather bound books.
Upstairs you’ll find the remaining three bedrooms, one twin and two king-sized rooms complete with ensuites. Stone-tiled with deluxe chrome finishes, there’s little that’s rustic about these rooms. Choose between a Turkish-style bath and a mood-lit aromatherapy shower to unwind and wash away the heat of the day.
Outside the villa is no less impressive than indoors. The large, private pool is instantly inviting. Brilliant blue in a terrace of terracotta, recline on a cushioned lounger to take in distant, hilly views. To the lower ground floor below the pool you’ll find a changing area complete with shower, WC and gym. This equipment, with the addition of table football, plants you firmly back in the 21st century and lets you dial up the energy levels in this Tuscan hideaway.
No villa would be complete without a built-in barbecue, and Villa Dell Angelo is no exception. Stoke the coals and get grilling whatever delicious local produce you found at the markets that morning. Serve it up alfresco at the outdoor dining suite, with panoramic views beyond. It makes the great outdoors that bit greater.
In your elevated spot surrounded by rolling hills and olive trees you’ll feel delightfully secluded from the world. Actually, you’ll find you’re in a Tuscan sweet spot, less than an hour’s drive from Lucca, Florence and Pisa, surely must-visit sights for any Tuscan holiday. Closer to home around Pistoia you can swap Renaissance cities for the Ombrone River Valley and the beautiful landscape and sweet towns of the Valdinievole.
At the end of a day’s exploration, you’ll return to own piece of Tuscan past, where you can write a little history of your own.
The cherry on top? Villa Dell Angelo has been awarded the coveted James Villas’ ‘Green Scheme’ status. A more eco-friendly holiday accommodation choice, it makes that Tuscan countryside escape that bit greener!
