Sitting in a private location along a country track in beautiful countryside, close to the villages of Querceto and Ponteginori, in the region of Montecatini Val di Cecina, this spacious farmhouse boasts wonderful views of the surrounding area. There were only two of us rattling around in this huge old farmhouse so we tended to stay on one floor. For a large family group with kids it would be great fun. Large garden and pool, outdoor pizza oven and surrounded by fields with wild boar and deer. Be warned, this property is 1.7km down a bumpy dirt track so don't hire a sports car. But it's a lovely walk back up to the road and then on to the local hilltop village, Querceto, for a glass of wine from the castle winery. All in all a great time, especially for those wanting to escape from other people for a week.

Huge villa in a beautiful and tranquil location with lots of additional sitting and eating areas hidden away in the spacious grounds.
As mentioned in the description, it might suit two co-travelling parties best due to the two floors being joined by an external staircase. Some of the amenities were somewhat randomly distributed between the floors (microwave downstairs, dishwasher upstairs) and most crockery and cutlery seemed to have migrated to the dishwasher location.
Wifi reception in both floors was very good, although the speed of the connection was quite slow (not surprising in such a remote area, however). In fact the villa is very isolated, down a 1.5km winding dirt track, which many people will enjoy, although the 30 minute drive to a supermarket in either Volterra or Cecina is something of a chore. However the mini-market in Pontoginori is surprisingly well stocked (no fresh mile, though).
As seems to be the case with even the best villas there were a couple of blown lightbulbs and be warned that the electric sockets are the three-pin southern European style (a few adaptors to the two pin variety are in the villa).
The owners are very friendly and easily contactable and there's comprehensive information provided about the villa. The decor is interestingly rustic and the villa is, overall, exceptionally well-furnished. The gardens are lovely as is the pool, which is regularly maintained. Be aware, however, that it's the same 1.4m depth throughout (no shallow/deep ends).
We stayed for a week but would happily have stayed for much longer.

Family (the eldest child is at school)
Ideal for large family groups. Owners pop in daily to clean the pool. Half an hour from large supermarkets for grocery . One hour from Pisa. Lovely countryside and views. The villa was clean and had a good supply of catering equipment. The owners were easily contactable by phone. We had a lovely quiet family holiday .

This is probably our 6th or 7th James villas holiday and probably this was the best one.We spent a week here from 3rd may. Villa is so quiet and peaceful. Be prepared to drive everywhere, there is so much to see in the area. Owners were on hand if required but you are left alone to do your own thing. Nice touch to arrive to a lit fire and a nice cake. The upstairs terrace is a great sun trap. Plenty of timber in the garage cut up for the open fire if chilly in the evenings. Villa is really well equipped, cannot think of anything that wasn't there. The countryside is amazing. In short, would go back in the morning.
