Excursions and Places of Interest

Patti - excursions

Legend has it that Mamertino was the favourite wine of Julius Caesar and this rich red Nero d'Avola wine is produced locally to Patti & Messina at the Daemone vineyard. Tours of the vineyard and, of course, tastings are available and various wines, as well as cheeses and olive oils, can be purchased.

Natural areas of beauty

Majestic Mount Etna towers over the Sicilian landscape and is widely acknowledged as the most famous and awe inspiring natural phenomenon in Europe. Its peak remains snow capped for much of the season and even in the summer months a warm sweater should be taken when visiting the upper slopes.

The old town

Pattis history can be traced back to ancient Greek civilisation with its foundation in 385 BC when it was known as Tyndaris. Later to become a Roman stronghold, the town existed as a fortress to protect the coast from Barbary pirates and corsairs. The old town can still be found, with its Norman church and castle at the top of the hill. The narrow streets contain numerous shops, cafés and restaurants and history can be found around every corner, including the old Roman Villa with its splendid mosaics.

The ancient Roman ruins of Tyndaris can still be viewed and include the basilica, theatre, Roman villa and baths.

Churches / Cathedrals

The 10th century Norman Cathedral, rebuilt in the 18th century, contains many artefacts and the sarcophagus of Queen Adelaide, mother of Roger II.

Other Places of interest

As well as the old town, Patti has a coastal area known as Marina di Patti, with a beachside promenade, sandy beach and harbour side. As well as a good selection of cafés, bars and shops.
