Excursions and Places of Interest

Modica - excursions

The old town

Following the famous earthquake and floods of 1693 the town of Modica was split into two parts and remains today as Modica Alta (upper) and Modica Bassa (lower), which are connected by long flights of stairs. This unusual layout and the sight of the medieval buildings teetering on high above many others is worth a visit in itself.

Churches / Cathedrals

The upper part of the town is dominated by the striking Church of San Giorgio which was rebuilt in 1720 following the damage of the earthquake. The church is accessed by 250 steps but the climb will be worth it once you see its architecture and interior artwork.

Other Places of interest

Ever since the very first Spanish imports from south America, Modica has been famous for its confectionary and products made from Cocoa. Today there are many chocolate shops within the town, some have been there for centuries, and if you are lucky you may catch a demonstration using some of the chocolatiers traditional techniques. Modica's chocolate is famous for being quite crunchy where the sugar they use does not completely dissolve and it is often flavoured with chili, cinnamon or vanilla.
