Perhaps one of the most well-known resorts along the Amalfi coastline, Sorrento has become a very popular destination for many thanks to its truly unique landscape, location and superb views. Built into the high mountainside, many of the town’s colourful buildings overlook the bay of Naples across to the infamous Mount Vesuvius. The town itself centres around a bustling main square, Piazzo Tasso, where you will find busy pavement cafés serving Italian espressos and gelatarias offering ice-cream in so many different flavours. From here explore the narrow shopping streets, sample local wine and Limoncello before dining at one of the towns many good restaurants. Located within an hour of the city of Naples, the archaeological site of Pompeii and the island of Capri Sorrento is a great base from which to explore the region of Campania.

    Food & Dining

    The Amalfi Coast is the perfect place to sample all different types of fresh fish, seafood, fruit and vegetables. Cheese lovers wont be disappointed thanks to the delicacies produced in the Lattari mountains.

    You will find a variety of nightlife in the centre of Sorrento, from the small pubs on the quiet shopping streets, to sophisticated wine and piano bars, to late and lively discos and clubs located in the main piazza.

    Vineyards

    Visit the tiered vineyards and olive groves on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, where you can witness the different stages of wine and olive oil production as well as taste the local produce.

    Cruises

    Visit the Romantic island of Capri by ferry or Hydrofoil from Sorrento or Amalfi. Historically, this small island in the Gulf of Naples, was visited by Royals, Nobles and the rich and famous. Today however, tourists come from all over the world to visit the pretty little island, experience its long history, shop in its boutiques and visit its Grotta Azzurra (Blue cave) first discovered by the Romans. You can also take boat trips to the town of Positano further along the cost of visit the islands of Li Galli.

    Regions to visit

    The Amalfi Coast runs along the south of the Sorrentine Peninsular overlooking the Gulf of Salerno, and has been declared as a UNESCO world heritage site. Driving along this winding coastal road will bring you to some amazing towns perched high on the cliff side above the shimmering waters below. Positano, Amalfi and Ravello are perhaps the most well known examples and each one has its own selection of interesting tourist attractions. For example, the small town of Amalfi has a short stretch of pebbled beach, bustling piazzas and an impressive cathedral. You can also visit the Grotta dello Smeraldo, a haunting sea cave named after the eerie emerald colour that reflects off the waves.

    Other excursions

    Many hotels and restaurants in the Sorrento area offer the chance to join a cooking class. In most cases, they are run by local chefs who will teach you how to make traditional Sorrentine and Neopolitan dishes, followed by a lunch and wine tasting.

    The old town

    The old town of Sorrento is comprised of narrow, cobbled streets lined with market stalls, souvenir shops and busy Gelaterias. You can easily spend a morning or afternoon wandering these streets shopping for local Limoncello and stopping for a coffee or sweet treat. Down by the shore you will also find a good selection of seafood restaurants serving up the catch of the day.

    Museums

    the Correale di Terranova Museum in Sorrento is home to a fantastic collection of fine artefacts from the Correale houses of Naples and Sorrento. Organised over four floors this collection of fine paintings, excellent porcelain and beautiful furnishings shows off classic Italian style and design as well as an the flair of the aristocracy.

    Churches / Cathedrals

    In the centre of the town you will see the Cathedral of Sorrento as well as a number of smaller churches boasting impressive architecture and beautifully painted ceilings.

    Other Places of interest

    From Sorrento, you can travel by car, public transport or organised tour to the thought provoking archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum; ancient towns frozen in time by the eruptions of nearby Mount Vesuvius. These towns were destroyed in 79AD, where the town's buildings and it's inhabitants were buried in up to six meters of ash from the active volcano. You can take a guided tour, walking the streets where those people once walked, and visit several exhibits illustrating this tragic story.
