Thanks to the pumice soil in Santorini which is rich in minerals, the wines of Santorini are prized and very popular. There are nine main vineyards and wineries on Santorini. Santorini's ecological conditions have produced over time a unique type of vine pruning that growers call "kouloura" (curl), because its shape resembles a round basket. The "basket" shaped vines protect the soft and tender grape leaves from being damaged by the island's strong wind and sand.Mainly based on the South of the island, Sigalas Winery is near Oia in the North :Domain Sigalas is well known and offers wine tasting and meals. three are close to Akrotiri ; the most famous is Boutari, with Galas and Hatzidakis nearby. There are wine tasting excursions on offer that will take you to 4 -5 vineyards and arrange the wine tasting or just pop in and find one you like!
Regular local cruises and excursions boats run to Palea Kameni the tiny islet in the Caldera where you can swim in volcanic hot springs, and peer into the crater of an active volcano and explore the other small island of Thirassia that was part of the original island of Santorini. Catamarans also do day trips to nearby Crete and the small neighbouring island of Ios.
One of the prettiest villages in Santorini is Oia in the north. Mainly pedestrianised, it is the place to go for spectacular sunsets, it does get busy in high season, but walking through the narrow labyrinth streets and often treading on the roofs of houses is an amazing experience.
Another stunning timeless village is Pyrgos,up on a hillside, an old castle and beautiful churches offer 360% views around the whole island with a few local tavernas and shops can be discovered by walking the worn steps throughout the hamlet.
There are three main castles, the ruins of Oia, the Castle in Pyrgos and the Castelli in Emborio which is small and worth a visit for the pretty streets and views.
