Spicy sausages and salamis are produced on Lefkas and are known as one of the specialties’, fried or grilled, they have a rich array of spices and peppers and considered a delicacy. The popular fish dish, Savoro is a variety of fishes cooked with garlic, onions and rosemary or Aliada, another more delicate fish dish found in the Ionian Islands. The Ladopita is basically a pie made of olive oil, light and crisp, it is a great accompaniment to an early morning coffee or as a main course. The desserts of madolato a local nougat dish and pasteli, nougat with honey appeal to a sweet tooth and the local Bertzami wine is considered one of the best in Greece.
Throughout all delicate Venetian influences can be tasted, that are found all over the Ionian Islands.
Even though the capital of the island, Lefkas Town still has a relaxed and laid back atmosphere. There are plenty or bars and restaurants to choose from. On one of the island’s prettiest squares. Platia Agios Spyridon, in the heart of Lefkada Town, is often a hive of activity, playing host to religious processions and dramatic performances during the island’s annual summer arts festival. The northern end of the square is lined with bars and restaurants. Karya’s main square, shaded by enormous plane trees and filled to the brim with chattering diners, is equally atmospheric. Or why not try one of the many restaurants surrounding the harbour side. Evening nightlife will be traditional music or lounge bars you will find within the winding streets.
Siflogo winery can be found in the little mountainous village of Platistoma – providing wine tasting and tours of the vineyards.
Various boat excursions can be taken from Nidri, some of the more popular ones are a cruise around the island, day trips to Meganissi, excursions to the delightful neighbouring islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca and a the three island cruise of Onassis, Scorpios, Sparti and Scorpidi.

The natural beauty of Porto Katsiki offers one of the most impressive beaches that Lefkada is famous for with abrupt white cliffs form a magnificent backdrop. On the East Coast there are numerous pebble beaches and coves to explore, whilst on the West you can find more fantastic white sandy beaches and coves. The centre of the island is mountainous hiding unspoilt Lefkadian villages, and some breathtaking scenery. Try a walk to the Nydri Waterfalls near Rahi village or cycle around Vlicho Bay to the little white church of Agia Kiriaki on the headland of Geni. For those with more energy there are walks into the surrounding hills to Paleokatouna, Neohori and Haradiatika, springtime the flowers and blossoms are beautiful.
Among the most popular sights are the waterfalls of Nidri and the Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni, on a hill above the Town. Most spots in Lefkas offer gorgeous view to the Ionian Sea and the mainland. The highlight on Lefkas is the exotic blue colour of its beaches. Porto Katsiki, Egremni, Kathisma, Tsoukalades, Agios Nikitas are paradise.
Hire a small boat for the day at Nidri harbour and search for hidden coves and beaches the island has to offer or travel around Skorpios and Meganissi where you can moor and wander the villages.
Lefkas town is a wonderfully historic old town, wader the harbour side offering a host of waterside tavernas and cafés. See the swing bridge, which attaches Lefkas to the mainland and the Frankish Fortress called Ayia Mavra.
Various Museums can be found around Lefkas town including Archaeological Museum of Lefkada a Byzantine museum and a folk museum.
Some of the best attractions in Lefkada are the churches and monasteries that are scattered around the island. With beautiful Venetian architecture, impressive frescoes and wooden domes built between 17th and 18th century. One of the oldest Byzantine monuments of Lefkas is the church of Panagia Hodegetria.
The church of Agios Ioannis Atzoussis is an old church that is literally built into a rock, above the beach of Agios Ioannis, close to the main town.
In the heart of the capital lies the church of Christou Pandokratora. It was built in 1684 by the Venetians following their victory against the Turks.
The Monastery pf Panagia Faneromeni is well- known as the most significant religious monument located between the capital and the village of Frynio. It lies on a fabulous location full of pine trees with lovely views to Agios Ioannis Frini bay.
The Castle of Santa Maura, at the entrance of the island before the canal bridge that connects the island with the mainland, is one of the most emblematic medieval castles.
Lefkas town, constitutes a characteristic architecture developed during the years of Venetian occupation. Part of the island's cultural heritage lies in the traditional settlements of Sivota and Agios Nikitas with numerous buildings, colourful houses and historical monuments.
There are many villages around Lefkas that charm with their simplicity and austerity, showing a huge respect in the island's tradition. These houses are built with local materials like stone and wood, totally harmonized with the natural landscape.
Around Lefkas you will find an abundance of churches and historic monasteries. The trademark of the island is the lighthouse at the southernmost side, after Porto Katsiki.
