Simple and unpretentious from the outside, Villa L’Artiste nestles quietly amongst iconic pines and cypress trees, an authentic French ‘mas’ built with local stone, its windows framed with traditional painted shutters. As you walk into the spacious entrance hall, the eye is immediately drawn to the beauty of the exposed stone walls and timber beams across the ceiling, with soft lighting designed to offer a warm welcome.
The elegant yet cosy lounge has an eclectic mix of antique and modern furnishings in dusky shades of plum, lilac and lavender blue. Beautiful oil paintings, pretty glass vases and stylish lamps create a calm and restful ambience. In the lovely dining area, with its fine stone fireplace, a striking round dining table provides a cosy spot to discuss the day’s activities over supper.
When it comes to preparing meals, L’Artiste is bang up to date. The villa’s state of the art contemporary kitchen is immaculately fitted with sleek cabinetry and the latest appliances, including an American style fridge freezer and coffee machine. A breakfast bar with funky bar stools encourages company for whoever is taking a turn with the cooking, which of course is no hardship in a setting such as this.
Upstairs, there are four en suite bedrooms, one of which is accessed through a separate external entrance. Each one is tastefully presented, boasting gorgeous linens in soft pastel shades and the finest quality bedding. The bath and shower rooms have also been refurbished, each with their own individual style, with sleek, modern tiles and contemporary fixtures and fittings.
The villa’s extensive two acre gardens are another delightful surprise, with lush green lawns fringed by well-tended shrubs and over-sized planters, made all the more private by rows of mature conifers along the boundary. The pièce de résistance is the stunning, elongated pool, stretching some 24m and providing plenty of opportunity for even serious swimmers to rise to a few lengths a day. For tennis aficionados and beginners alike, the adjacent private tennis court is an extra special feature of this wonderful home while the boules pitch will appeal to guests of all ages.
Taking full advantage of the glorious Provencal climate, the outdoor dining room, complete with rattan-style sofas, dining suite and straw canopy for shade, will likely be the most frequented part of the villa. Here, you can throw a few steaks on the barbecue, grab a cold beverage from the outdoor fridge and really unwind with friends and family.
The market in nearby St Remy is a great source of produce for your alfresco dining and of course has an abundance of bars and eateries should you feel like indulging in some local flavours. There are also lots of art galleries, ancient churches, Roman ruins and tranquil lakes to explore, while the attractive city of Avignon is less than an hour’s drive from the villa.
With its relaxed style, superb facilities and enviable location, Villa L’Artiste has much to recommend it.
