Roussillon

This wonderful, picturesque village is a ‘must-see’ when visiting the Luberon, and many visitors are attracted by the beautiful old buildings, great restaurants, and several art galleries. The village is a labyrinth of winding narrow streets and squares, lined by beautiful, rustic houses. Various local festivals take place during summer months, offering a great opportunity to soak up some of the local way of life. Roussillon is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and the area is well-known for its dramatic red-rock cliffs, interspersed with lush woodland. There are plenty of opportunities for walking and cycling amid this wonderful landscape.

Natural areas of beauty

Les Gorges de Regalon : just beside Merindol, take a wonderful walk through a narrow canyon; the scenery, terrain, and views all make this hike extremely interesting - actually spectacular.
The Alpilles mountains: at the heart of a region with a unique diversity of landscapes, this unique area was classified as a Parc Naturel Régional
Les Baux is a spectacular rock plateau 250m up in the sky with views south over the Alpilles, and to Arles and the Camargue.

Regions to visit

A tour around the Mont Ventoux gives you a different perspective of Provence, from the lavender country round Sault to the west, to the wine country and Roman treasures of Vaison la Romaine in the East, and the beautiful and little-known villages scattered in between.

The old town

if you walk up to the Castrum at the top you get some wonderful panoramic views across the valley to the Grand Luberon, the slopes of Mont Ventoux, and the plateau of the Vaucluse.
Roussillon is full of interesting, photogenic doorways and also has many restaurants to choose from, several of them clustered in the main square.

Castles

Every village in Provence was built around a castle or some form of defensive structure, and many of them remain, in differing states, from a few walls to entirely preserved buildings. Some are privately owned and not open to the public, but some can be visited.
