Food & Dining

Food and dining at Porec

Istrian cuisine is very natural and simple, taking key ingredients fresh from the land and sea. Around Porec, many dishes are prepared with the local wild plants, wine, vinegar and olive oil. If you want to sample something truly Istrian, try the prsut – a cured ham which all Istrian’s are proud of. The seafood is always fresh and delicious, and sample something rare and native – the Istrian truffle – usually used to flavour pasta and meat.

Museums

The Euphrasian Basilica is the most valuable cultural property in Porec. It was built in the 6th century, during the time of Bishop Euphrasius and includes baptistery, bishop's palace, mosaics and remains dating back to the 3rd and 4th centuries. The mosaics are thought to be a valuable piece of Byzantine art and because they have been preserved so well the periods of construction and renovation can still be read.

National parks

Brijuni National Park

Ancient roman villas, Illyrian palaces, Byzantine forts, medieval churches and finally – the luxurious presidential residence, visited by the most powerful politicians and famous stars of the 20th century. The private resort owned by Yugoslav president Tito, had been closed for public for decades.

The unique natural beauties and the ideal Mediterranean microclimate give it an additional dimension of exclusivity. The island is inhabited by exotic animals and plants from all over the world.

Architecture

Balbi's Arch.

Where the Balbi’s Arch stands today, there used to be the main gate to the fortified city of Porton della Pescheria. The old gate was pulled down in 1678/79 and the Balbi's Arch was built in its place.
