Aphrodite Hills, Cyprus is the perfect destination for families, allowing you to enjoy the freedom of self-catering with the luxury of a resort stay. Aphrodite Hills is large coastal holiday resort, located in the south of the small island nation of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea, just south of Turkey and south east of Greece. It was recently voted the world’s best new resort, but what’s it like to actually holiday there?
The James villas at Aphrodite Hills are stunning self-contained houses, with clean, large rooms, comfortable living spaces and excellent amenities. Your lounge will include a TV and the majority also have DVD Players. Almost all villas have Wi-Fi, so you can Skype back home if you wish to make everyone jealous of your luxury accommodation. Some villas will have an en suite off the master bedroom, and if you’re staying for seven nights, housekeeping will visit mid-week to freshen everything up. In peak season, when things really hot up, you’ll be glad of the full air conditioning, while the heating can be turned on during the colder months.
For those villas with private pools, you’ll find a covered terrace and sun loungers. If you are staying outside of the peak summer season and have a villa with a heated pool, you can also request that the pool heating is turned on before you arrive, so that it’s at a perfect temperature when you dip your toes in for the first time.
In the kitchen, you’ll find a welcome package to get you through your first breakfast, as well as plenty of counter space, a dishwasher, microwave, hob, oven and fridge/freezer, plus a dining area. All in all, you should have no problems cooking comfortably in your villa, and you’ll also find you’ve been provided with a barbecue for outdoor cooking. The Best of James villas at Aphrodite Hills come equipped with towels, hairdryers, toiletries and washing machine. And the bedrooms are comfortable and well-stocked with robes, slippers, cushions and spare blankets. All power sockets in the villas are designed to fit UK-style three pin plugs, so you will be able to bring your hair straighteners and other gadgets and plug them straight in.
Shopping and eating on resort
Aphrodite Hills village is just a short drive from the villas and has lots to offer, from restaurants, to a Costa coffee shop, to a spa and gym, kids’ play area, and even a well-stocked grocery shop where you can gather all the supplies you need. This way of life means you can enjoy all the activity and convenience of a modern village, but can retreat back to your relatively secluded villa whenever you wish.
A must-visit eatery on resort is the five-star Aphrodite Hills Golf Club Restaurant, which is named after the resort’s championship golf course. This bright, comfortable restaurant offers a delicious combination of traditional Cypriot dishes as well as a range of dishes inspired by classics from around Europe. They also offer a ‘Junior Golfers’ menu with child-friendly flavours and portion-sizes. You can dine indoors, or soak up the sunshine out on the open terrace and enjoy views of the 18th green, a beautiful combination of the natural dry Cypriot landscape and the verdant, irrigated golf course.
For fans of Italian cuisine, visit Zimi Trattoria, located in the middle of Village Square. Zimi is an Italian restaurant with an excellent selection of pasta, wood fired pizzas, savoury breads, and other Italian inspired mains and desserts. It’s very family-friendly, so it’s a lovely place to drop in for a simple meal in the sun, or an evening meal with the whole family.
For a more authentic Cyprus experience, you can dine at Pithari Tavern, a traditional Cypriot tavern which serves an enticing variety of Greek and Cypriot dishes, served by warm and welcoming staff. They specialise in meze, a Cypriot culinary institution much like tapas, so if you wish, you can skip ordering mains and instead choose from the wide selection dips and grills that will see you well fed.
Other dining options include Anoi Pub, serving pub favourites such as chicken wings, burgers and Tex-Mex, Ladi & Rigani, a traditional Cypriot kebab house, and Gate to India, a stylish restaurant serving mouth-watering Indian dishes.
Activities for families
A sandy-floored playground is accessible for children year round, with plenty of places to climb, slide and play for both younger and older kids, and benches so that parents can rest weary feet. There’s even a zip wire for brave young explorers, but it’s the kids club open 10am – 6pm that will stand out as a highlight for many, offering guided sports and craft activities across indoor and outdoor play areas.
There’s also a soccer club, The Aphrodite Hills Dream Team Soccer School, which is a professional provider of lessons to suit all ages and abilities. You can choose from a range of group or private sessions to suit your child.
If you’re keen to hit the beach while in Cyprus, there are two nearby to choose from, with shuttle buses from the resort and back every hour during the day.
You should be aware that some of the restaurants, services and facilities are seasonal, so it is worth checking the details on the James Villas website prior to booking.
And of course, with such incredible surroundings on resort, there’s lots more fun to be had. You could play a few rounds on the world-class Championship golf course, hit the tennis courts, travel out to Aphrodite Rock for open water swimming, take a jog or hill walk up the summit in nearby Kouklia, embark on a guided cycling tour of the port of Paphos, or perhaps just relax in the sun of the village square. However you like to holiday, you’re going to love Aphrodite Hills.
