Hit the beach on a Tuscany villa holiday
In an article for the New York Times, journalist Frank Bruni said most tourists, when they think of Tuscany, plan visits to cities such as Florence and Siena.
But he insisted there is more to the region than its inland cultural attractions.
He said the coast of Tuscany is accessible and relatively uncrowded, making it a great place to relax and enjoy some good food and wine.
Indeed, the food on offer along the coast is every bit as delicious as that served up inland, but the choice of fresh seafood is even more impressive.
Mr Bruni recommended a ferry trip to the island of Elba, which boasts "crescent-shaped hideaways" surrounded by "clear turquoise water".
"It's an hour's ride from the Tuscan city of Piombino, yet it feels more remote than that," he remarked.
Families eager to see the delights of the Tuscan seaside themselves could book a villa in the resort of Donoratico, which is close to the Etruscan coast.
Those who fancy a day in one of Tuscany's cities can also fit this in, as Pisa, Florence and Rome can be easily accessed via the motorway.
