Menorca villa guests urged to see sandstone quarry

Holiday makers who will be staying in a Menorca villa this summer have been encouraged to pay a visit to Ses Pedreres de S'Hostal - a local sandstone quarry.

Workers have been extracting sandstone from the area for the past 200 years, making the most of its natural resources until operations were shut down in November 1994.

An association was created shortly after to preserve the area and highlight its importance as a geological heritage site.

The Balearic Islands tourist board encouraged Menorca villa guests and others to visit the quarry at dusk to see "the play of lights and shadows on the rock".

Ses Pedreres de S'Hostal has become a popular gathering point for tourists and locals alike, regularly hosting cultural events, sculpture workshops, tai-chi courses and more.

The most popular annual traditions include the Full Moon Fiesta that takes place in August and the open-air theatre performances staged during the summer.
