Booking a Lanzarote villa holiday is one of the best ways to escape the bleak British winter.

The fourth-largest Canary Island is just a four hour flight from the UK - but it could be world apart thanks to its location off the west African coast, holidayhypermarket.co.uk reports.

A Puerto del Carmen villa is one of the most popular choices among British holiday makers, be it those looking for summer winter sunshine or families arriving during the height of summer.

One of Lanzarote's longest beaches is located at Puerto del Carmen, and it's not just taken by up with sun worshippers.

The more adventurous holiday makers can make use of the beach's impressive range of watersports, while the local nightlife ranges from live music to family-run pubs.

Local restaurants are especially geared towards families, with the majority offering special children's menus.

Tourists staying in Puerto del Carmen villas are also ideally placed for day excursions, with the Timanfaya National Park easily accessible from the resort.

If the sea is where you want to stay, then holiday makers can take a 30m trip underwater on the yellow submarine, taking in fish and the occasional shark.

The most easterly of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote enjoys a mild, dry climate.
