Book a Lanzarote holiday to explore a "gem"

Lanzarote holiday makers have much to enjoy in this particular Canary island, according to one writer.

Tim Harrison of the Spectator says Lanzarote - which has a unique volcanic geology - is something of a "gem" that enjoys an unspoiled landscape despite being widely developed.

He praises the island's cuisine - which includes goat's cheese, seafood such as gambas, tuna and vieja and slow-cooked stews - as well as its wine.

Lanzarote has been producing wine since the 16th century, with top tipples including semi-dry wines and the intense Vino Dulce.

Mr Harrison concludes with a description of Lanzarote as "a place set up for the modern holiday maker, yet retaining the quirks and idiosyncrasies that imbue character".

Britons going on a Lanzarote villa holiday can enjoy a wide range of attractions, including the Timanfaya National Park - which is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve - as well as over 15 museums and art galleries.

The island is situated 1,000 km from the Iberian Peninsula and 140 km from the African coast. A number of smaller islets and islands can be found to the north of Lanzarote, including La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste.
