Florida holidays growing in popularity

The number of people taking a holiday in Florida is on the rise, the latest official figures show.

Visit Florida has revealed that 20.8 million tourists visited the Sunshine State in the second quarter of 2010.

While domestic arrivals increased by a modest 2.4 per cent, the number of international visitors soared by 11.9 per cent.

And interest in holidays in Florida also appears to be going in the right direction, with Visit Florida's website receiving a record number of hits during the month of June.

Perhaps making the figures all the more impressive is the fact that the south-eastern tip of the US had to deal with negative publicity surrounding the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico throughout much of the period in question.

"Without Governor Crist's intense focus and our aggressive tourism marketing efforts during May and June [Florida] could easily have been looking at a very different outcome," says Chris Thompson, president and chief executive officer at Visit Florida.

Those intending to travel to the state this autumn may be interested in timing their trip to coincide with the Vintage Venture car show, due to run in Orlando on October 9th and 10th.
