Families taking holidays during school term urged to 'seek out education'

Parents who are opting to book up family holidays to Crete during school terms have been encouraged to plan their trip so that it benefits a child's education.

Bob Atkinson, travel expert at Travelsupermarket.com, acknowledged that it is common knowledge that snapping up a getaway outside of the school holidays is the cheaper option.

However, the expert was keen to stress that he and Travelsupermarket.com would never condone such actions unless parents first sought permission from a school's authority.

Mr Atkinson added: "We would also always encourage families to think carefully about where they are going on holiday at that time, and to try to ensure there is an educational benefit of some form in the destination they're going to."

He explained that this could involve travelling to some historical sites while on a getaway or learning about a destination's food and culture.

Crete holidays allow Brits to explore a wide range of ancient attractions, including the Venetian fortress of Rethymnon, Fortezza, and the sacred sites of the Ideon Andron Cave and the Dikteon Andron Cave.
