Southern Umbria offers scenic gems
In an article for the Telegraph, Tim Jepson said northern Umbria is well known among tourists thanks to its "dulcet coronet of hill towns".
However, he claimed that the southern part of the region is "scenically far more spectacular" and less visited by holiday makers.
It is also where many of Italy's best gastronomic delights can be found, he added, with black truffles, salami, wild boar and Castelluccio lentils all on the menu.
Families who wish to explore southern Umbria could rent a villa in Todi, which is in a fairly central location so will act as a great base for daily excursions.
In addition, the Magical Piazza del Pololo in Todi's historic town centre is believed to be one of Italy's best medieval squares.
And the churches of San Fortunato and Santa Maria are also must-see attractions for those staying in the area.
