Look out for the Ides of May on an Umbria holiday

The Calendimaggio festival is celebrated on the first Thursday, Friday and Saturday of May every year in Assisi, during which the entire town is reported to be decorated with banners of silk.

Assisi's "flower patterned streets" are open to the public with locals dressed in a colourful range of period costumes and the celebrations "include competitions with love songs, games and events" as the pagan festival of Calendimaggio is re-enacted, according to Ultimate Italy.

For those who want to delight in the sights of the festival, a villa in the delightful town of Marsciano could be right up their street as it is a busy little town that offers relaxation and revelry, as well as an ideal location to explore Assisi.
