Locals celebrate a miracle in the region of Umbria

One of the most prominent of these is the Corpus Domini which takes place every May in Orvieto, when more than 400 people in brightly coloured costumes parade through the town.

The procession celebrates a miracle which, it is claimed, happened in 1264 when a priest on a pilgrimage from Rome to Prague stopped at a local church.

During the service he claimed to have seen the Host suddenly bleeding profusely and the blood-stained habit is still kept in the cathedral in Orvieto.

Time honoured traditions such as this are the perfect complement to some of the more contemporary festivities which take place in Umbria, such as the annual jazz festival.

There is also a 700-year-old university in the area.
