Enjoy food heaven on an Umbria villa holiday
In an article for the Columbia Daily Tribune, Marcia Vanderlip said she enjoyed eating out and cooking in while on holiday in Umbria.
Those who rent villas in the region could do the same, visiting traditional Italian restaurants on some evenings and experimenting with fresh ingredients from local markets on others.
Ms Vanderlip said she discovered umbricelli, a traditional Umbrian pasta made with durum wheat and water, at a restaurant in Orvieto.
It came topped with a sausage and mushroom sauce, which she said her friend thoroughly enjoyed.
Afterwards, her group went shopping and found some umbricelli in a local fresh pasta shop, which they served up with a tomato-anchovy marinara.
"It was satisfying and inexpensive and we had great leftovers," she remarked.
Holiday makers could discover Italy's gastronomic delights for themselves by renting a villa in Orvieto.
Rome and Florence are both within driving distance of the ancient city and would make great food-orientated day trips.
