Assisi is a sight for sore eyes

Assisi is a peaceful town but boasts a rich heritage and could be a must for anyone with an interest in religious heritage.

Although you do not have to be a pilgrim to value Assisi, the town has been dominated for centuries by the iconic but unpretentious figure of St Francis - whose followers are reported to have covered the quiet town with an array of shrines, churches and monasteries.

According to Italy Heaven: "Everywhere you look in Assisi, you will find another fine church."

Assisi is just a short drive from the quaint but busy little town of Marsciano, which boasts a stunning villa with a private pool and al fresco dining area for those who love to barbecue and can act as a base to discover Assisi and the rest of Umbria.
