Watch the Pisa Bridge Battle on a Tuscany villa holiday

Dating back to the Middle Ages, the Gioco del Ponte takes place on the city's Ponte di Mezzo bridge and attracts thousands of spectators every year.

Participants dress in medieval costumes, some stationed on the southern bank of the River Arno and the rest on the northern side.

Back when the event first took place, the opposing teams would fight with maces and shields. Today the weapons are simply for show.

Instead, a large wooden chariot is used in a giant tug-of-war as combatants attempt to push it across the bride onto the bank of their opponents.

This year's Gioco del Ponte will be held on Sunday June 28th and will be preceded by a historical procession through Pisa.

Tourists hoping to join the crowds at the event and learn more about Pisa's rich history could rent a Tuscany villa in Donoratico.

From here, Pisa can be accessed easily via the motorway or by train, while holiday makers can enjoy some peace and quiet within the resort.

Indeed, Donoratico boasts some beautiful golden sandy beaches and is located on an olive grove and vineyard, making it perfect for a relaxing break.
