Watch a horse-drawn drama on a Tuscany holiday

On July 2nd and August 16th, Siena hosts what Steve Burgess of the Weekend Post calls "the world's most political horse race", in news that may be of interest to Tuscany holiday makers.

The bareback horse race has been held since the tenth century and involves ten horses each doing three laps around a track circling the Campo, or town square.

Each horse represents a contrada - a neighbourhood group - and the winner claims the il Palio banner.

However, the loser is not the horse who comes last but that which finishes second - historically considered an "epic disaster", notes the publication.

Tuscany holiday makers who prefer celebrity-spotting to horse racing should not be disappointed - according to the report, past races have drawn famous faces such as Tom Hanks and Mel Gibson.

According to Time Out Travel, a highlight of Siena is the Duomo, which was consecrated in 1179.
