Volterra a Tuscany holiday 'hotspot'

A new article in the Des Moines Register details the Tuscany holiday journey made by its writer and his wife.

Volterra was named as the high-point of the trip. An ancient hill town, the location is popular among tourists looking for a Tuscany villa experience that combines a historical sensibility with a vibrant cultural life.

The writer's visit coincided with Italy's celebration of Liberation Day, which marks the end of German occupation on April 25th 1945.

"Volterra's celebration involved a mini marching band in colourful medieval garb leading an entourage of townsfolk and war veterans around the stony streets," he explains.

Due to the national holiday, street markets abounded around Volterra, treating Tuscany holiday makers to culinary delights such as pecorino cheese, fresh strawberries and crusty bread.

"This was a Tuscan traveller's dream come true," the article asserts.

Volterra is famous for its alabaster stoneware, which has been produced since the fifth century BC.
