Visit the home of botanical gardens on a Tuscany villa holiday
Pisa Botanic Garden is the oldest of its type in Europe and has housed stunning rare plants, manicured parks and gardens since 1543.
According to representatives at Kew, these early gardens were designed as "medicinal teaching collections".
"The Pisa garden is of particular interest as not only was an early herbarium begun there by Ghini, but it was also the instigator of a number of botanical expeditions in the north of Italy," Kew said.
Such private collections were reportedly seen as a status symbol for the wealthy to display the depth of their fortune.
Just over an hour from Pisa lies the medieval city of Volterra, which could provide a perfect place to explore Pisa and Tuscany.
Volterra is also home to Museo Guarnacci, one of the earliest public museums in Europe.
