Unusual boat race is great day out from Tuscany villa

The race takes place in the town of Castelfranco di Sotto in Pisa and is known locally as the Palio dei Barchini.

But holiday makers will find that it is not your average boat race.

The vessels don't compete on water as this is a race strictly for dry land that sees four vessels complete with wheels, race through the area.

Each quarter of the town is represented in the race and brings their own boat to the proceedings.

The rowers must push their vehicle around a circuit and complete three laps before their challenge is over.

As well as the excitement of the race - local pride makes it quite a competitive event - holiday makers can expect plenty of traditional entertainment, making it the perfect day out from a Tuscany villa.
