Tuscany villa a launch-pad for trip to San Gimignano

The town is named after a fourth-century Modena bishop and is famous for its 14 towers - although at one point there were as many as 72.

They were built as private fortresses and as a show of their owners' wealth, with each builder trying to construct the highest tower possible.

Other must-sees in the town include San Gimignano's two squares, Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo.

The Piazza del Duomo contains the cathedral after which the square is named.

The city would be an ideal excursion for those staying at a family villa in Tuscany.
