Tuscany 'lives up to its image'

In an article for the Globe and Mail, Lee Marshall said the people of Tuscany share an "inherent respect" for the region's "historical and architectural integrity".

He said panoramas are important to Tuscans and most hilltop villages have one side that "takes the breath away with its untouched purity".

To explore the region, Mr Marshall recommended dividing it into themes - wine, walks and wide-open landscapes, churches, beaches and gardens and classic Tuscany.

Indeed, he said tourists can discover hidden vineyards, quaint villages and spectacular coastal areas all within the same region, as it offers a "slideshow of different landscapes".

Holiday makers keen to see the many sights of Tuscany could rent a villa in the hilltop village of Monteverdi Marittimo.

From here, they can enjoy beautiful views out towards the sea as well as the surrounding countryside.

There are also some fascinating Roman ruins nearby, while the beach at Marina di Donoratico is a 35-minute drive away.
