Tuscany holidays 'could be the eco-conscious choice'

The Independent observes that some 25 per cent of electricity used in the region is fuelled by geothermal power, so taking a Tuscany holiday could benefit the environment as well as the senses.

Christena Appleyard writes that Brits on Tuscany holidays tend to "pride themselves on the appreciation of the finer things in life", choosing the area for its food, scenery, art and architecture.

"Now they can pat themselves on the back for taking a holiday that also has cutting-edge eco credentials," she points out.

Geothermal power harnesses heat from the earth's core to generate energy, the report notes.

Italy is fortunate enough to have the particular combination of geological conditions that make this energy source possible and its history of innovation in engineering makes it the fourth-biggest geothermal generator in the world.

New statistics from iknow-uk indicate that booking enquiries for holidays were up by 60 per cent in May compared to the same month in 2007, reports travelbite.co.uk.
