Tuscany holidays are 'perfect for half-term'
A guide in the Independent takes in the medieval cities of Castel San Gimignano and Volterra, before heading on to well-preserved Siena.
San Gimignano is home to 14th century murals and crumbling towers, while Volterra wins plaudits for its local feel and views of the countryside.
Larger Siena is home to the annual Palio horse race and a "magnificent" duomo, which has frescos painted by Donatello, Pisano and Pinturicchio.
The article also advises travellers to view Duccio's Maesta (Madonna and Child in Majesty), which is located next to the Duomo in a museum.
Families are encouraged to try horse riding in the Tuscan countryside, which keeps young children happy while adults can marvel at the views and setting sun.
One of the most popular activities for families to try in Tuscany is a bike ride, with plenty of hire companies available according to Trip Advisor.
