Tuscany holiday 'a chance to learn Italian'
Writing in the Seattle Times, Maureen Bomben Kerber reveals that her visit to the Tuscany province of Lucca was her chance to fulfil a lifelong dream of learning Italian.
She notes: "Walking to school on the first day, I barely noticed the beautiful facade of the San Michele church, the chandeliers hanging in the shop windows or the sprinkling of locals walking their dogs, elegantly dressed even at this early hour."
And a handmade meal in the hills outside Lucca enabled Ms Kerber to demonstrate her new-found skill over a traditional Italian feast of pasta, wine grappa and meat.
Founded by the Etruscans, Lucca became a Roman colony in 180 BC. People visiting the province on a Tuscany holiday can observe the historical centre's preserved Roman street plan and traverse the expansive piazzas.
