The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore came sixth in the top ten attractions that don't charge for entry on the continent, as determined by tourists and editors of TripAdvisor.

Anyone intending to work a visit to the famously stunning city into their Tuscany villa holiday timetable should remember that a day trip to Florence need not be expensive, the online community advised.

Michele Perry, vice-president of global communications for TripAdvisor, commented: "As travellers look for ways to save on their vacation this summer, TripAdvisor has recommended top attractions with a price that appeals to even the most frugal visitors."

For visitors looking to save time as well as money, the Times recently recommended that visitors to Florence take advantage of the queue-jumping opportunities available online for galleries like the Uffizi and the Accademia.
