See the San Ranieri Regatta on a Tuscany holiday

Taking place on June 17th every year, this may be the perfect time of year to plan a holiday to Italy.

The famous Arno river is the setting for the race, which sees the four quarters of Pisa race against each other in homage to San Ranieri.

According to Whatsonwhen, the competitors race 1,500 metres against the current in a fight to be "the first to rip the palio, or sacred banner, from the finishing post".

"The colourful event is the perfect opener for the Tuscan festive season," it adds.

Tuscany's tranquil village of Ghizzano is just 45 minutes away from Pisa, so those staying in a villa there can watch the race and be home in time for some al fresco dining under the stars.
