See 'picture-postcard' Tuscany

Travel writer Bess Manson says that in Tuscany there is always the temptation to laze by the private pool, but those who elect to take to the road are in for a real treat, particularly if they visit Montalcino and its castle.

Construction of the famous castle began in 1361 and much of it remains intact to this day.

Like most Tuscany towns, Montalcino is perched on a hilltop and offers wonderful vistas.

"This sleepy spot is another series of winding streets of stone houses, ancient churches and the requisite cafes and restaurants with alfresco dining," Ms Manson writes in the Press and Journal.

She adds that the fortified town is famous for its red Brunello wine and while there they dined at a restaurant overlooking the valley and ate "just about the best pizzas we had ever tasted".
