See Luminara and the Race of San Ranieri on a Tuscany holiday

On June 17th, the Feast of San Ranieri - in honour of the Patron Saint of Pisa - is celebrated every year as locals and people renting villa in Tuscany mix in the Mediterranean.

According to the Italian Tourist Board, the enchantment of the illuminations of Saint Ranieri is revived on the streets running along the River Arno and following the ancient tradition the Pisans celebrate their patron saint the next day.

"There are about 70,000 wax candles, which at every edition are meticulously set in smooth and white glasses and fixed then onto wooden white-painted frames," the organisation says.

It adds they are modelled in such a way as to "exalt the outline" of the palaces, bridges, churches and towers in the river.

While in the area, holiday makers could also visit the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa.
