San Gimignano: Tuscany
Italy is famous for its architectural heritage and holidaymakers looking for culture and particularly architecture will be drawn to the region of Tuscany.
Florence offers some of Italy's most stunning art and architecture but other locations away from the city can provide visitors with a good reason to leave the peace and quiet of their villa.
San Gimignano is one of these locations, and holidaymakers can visit the town which is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
An important town in the middle ages, San Gimignano has many towers that made good watching points for a town on a trade and pilgrimage route.
During its prosperity the town had about 72 towers rising above the roof tops, today there are 14 but they are still an impressive testament to medieval architecture.
The town is located within the city walls and on the hill a ruined fortress, The Rocca, can be found.
The Rocca is a great place for holidaymakers who want to take a break from the hustle and bustle of visitor attractions and surrounded by green parks and olive groves it provides great views of the Tuscan landscape.
