Sagra del vino de Montecarlo, Tuscany
Traditional harvest festivals are held all around Tuscany in September, reflecting the region's farming roots as well as its celebrated natural produce.
One of the most enjoyable is held in the town of Montecarlo, near Lucca in the heart of vineyard country.
Many local winemakers set up stalls at the festival each year, reflecting Montecarlo's status as an internationally famous wine producer.
The hilltop town contains a well-preserved historic centre, as well as intact fortified walls and a small fortress, Rocca del Cerruglio, which provides a high vantage point for visitors to view the surrounding vineyards.
Cultivation of grapes for wine dates all the way back to the Etruscans; centuries of accumulated expertise are therefore to be found in the little town square.
The wines of the region are noted for their delicacy and subtle flavour, a contrast to traditionally hearty Tuscan wines.
Notably, Montecarlo vines sometimes contain both Cabernet and Sauvignon grapes, perhaps contributing to the unusually refined flavour of the local produce.
