Pucci collection, Tuscany
As any holiday maker to the country can attest, that Italians are dedicated followers of fashion is indisputable.
Now, both local and holiday making fashion hounds are converging on Siena, due to one of the nation's most celebrated ateliers - Pucci - putting some of its vast archive on show.
A truly fabulous collection of scarves, gowns, shirts and suits - donated by the great Pucci himself in 1957 - is exhibited this month at Siena's Santa Maria della Scala.
The collection on show was inspired by the Palio - July's ninety-second horse race which is the highlight of the city's social calendar.
Born into Tuscan nobility in 1914, Emilio Pucci is a regional icon. Perfectly embodying the decadent economic postwar boom, his clothes adorned the glamorous jet-set of disenfranchised princesses and society wives which emerged throughout Europe and the US throughout the 1950s, 1960s and beyond.
The almost garish "Pucci print" became a design classic along the way, bedecking silk scarves, dresses, ski-suits and even wellington boots.
Following his death in 1992, Pucci's daughter Laudomia continued to design for the fashion house. Most recently, British designer Matthew Williamson - who has a similar liking for the brightly-coloured - has taken over as creative director.
The exhibition closes on September 9th; tickets cost 6, with concessions available.
