Passionate horse race 'displays history of Siena'
The most important event in Siena takes place on July 2nd and August 16th every year, both of which could be ideal times to learn about the city.
Known as the Palio, the race sees the various areas in which the city is divided into race in its very heart, according to Discover Tuscany.
"The Sienese live the Palio with great passion and you'll certainly be able to see this if you have the chance to attend one of the races," the site says.
Each area, or contrada, has its own individual emblem and colours and racers represent their local area with verve and fervour.
Visitors will always know which contrada they are in by the flags and emblems that adorn the streets of Siena.
For those who wish to see Siena, a villa in the pretty little town of Radicofani offers an ideal base and a dash of history itself as it was once one of Italys most important strongholds.
