Montepulciano offers much for visitors to explore
Full of renaissance buildings, the town is built along a narrow limestone ridge and is encircled by walls and fortifications designed by Antonio da Sangallo.
Many churches are crammed into the streets of the town and it is also known for its local wines and the Duomo area is particularly popular with visitors.
Designed between 1592 and 1630 by Ippolito Scalza, the outside of the Duomo building is unfinished and quite plain, but it is the interior that is designed in Classical proportions that draws the most visitors.
Alternatively holiday makers can see the Madonna di San Biagio which is a renaissance church built on the outskirts of the town.
Made with honey and cream coloured travertine stone it was Sangallo's most important work.
He started it in 1518 and continued working on the project until he died in 1534.
